Richard Dawkins on absolute morality.

This is a great little clip. The other day my brother and I had a discussion on morality and absolutes. He seems to think that humanity is inherently evil and that the world should deal in absolutes more often.

I strongly disagree with that statement. Morality cannot be dealt in absolutes, especially from religious morality. There is a reason why we no longer stone people to death for adultery despite it being written as law in most holy books. Now with that aside, do we think that other apes are inherently evil? I would hope that the majority of people would say no. How are we any different? We are apes, our behavior is simply a little more complex then that of apes. We act in relatively the same way for the same reasons. It’s written in our DNA, we just have more and perhaps better, ways of expressing our emotions. Morality is written in our DNA, it’s a variation of a survival instinct. Morality cannot be black and white, and that is proven by religion itself. Like I said, there is a reason why we no longer stone people to death for trivial “crimes”. Our sense of morality has evolved along side our social behaviors and they will continue to change.
